Monument to San Juan de la Cruz

It was originally erected in the center of the Las Delicias Square in 1961, commissioned by Martín Merino Chicharro, favourite son of La Carolina, and was the work of his son, the sculptor Martín Merino, who at that time had just finished his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Seville. It was made in the workshops of marbles of Manuel Gómez in Seville.

It was moved from Las Delicias Square to its current location in the Church Square. The friar is depicted embracing the Cross of Christ against his chest as he kneels in prayer. At the foot, a hare appears taking refuge under his habit, just as the friars of La Peñuela described what happened when San Juan miraculously extinguished the fire that threatened the convent's orchard.
