Room 3: Rome to Convent of La Peñuela

On 16 July 1212, the Battle of Navas de Tolosa took place between the Christian crusaders led by the King of Castile, Alfonso VIII, and the Almohads of Al Nasir. The result of that epic day was a triumph for the Christian arms that highlighted the disintegration and decadence of the Andalusians and Almohads. The crusade, brilliantly managed by Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada before Pope Innocent III, set out from Toledo in May of that year, and ended with the capture of the towns of Úbeda and Baeza. The Navas de Tolosa camp is located in the municipality of Santa Elena, and the battle took its name from the small rocky castle of Tolosa, in the municipality of La Carolina.
