Room 1: Introduction to the term
The wealth of metallic seams of argentiferous galena, from which lead and silver are extracted, is the other great key to understanding the past and the cultural heritage of La Carolina, which has had two great periods of splendour: the Hispano-Roman period and the contemporary period of the 19th and 20th centuries, becaming the world's leading producer of lead. You will be able to see a representative collection of minerals from different origins, showing the great variety of shapes, colours, aspects and characteristics of minerals. The presence of marine fossils indicates that more than 500 million years ago this area was covered by a large sea. Towards the end of the Palaeozoic, approximately 320 million years ago, the sediments of that sea underwent enormous stresses during the Hercynian Orogeny, forming the metamorphic rocks (quartzite and slate) that characterise the terrain.
